Advantages and disadvantages of frames

The Victorian Turkish Baths website makes use of frames to simplify moving around the site, and to allow footnotes to be read more easily. But this convenience comes at a price. Two disadvantages of frames are said to be:

  • it is difficult to bookmark pages;

  • printing a specific page can be confusing.

While these problems have not been completely solved, the following may help.

Printing the text of an article

The printer icon is linked to a printable version of the article which omits the notes and thumbnail pictures. The omitted pictures are listed at the end of the article and each of these can be printed in the normal way.

Bookmarking articles for future visits

Articles which can be bookmarked have a bookmark icon immediately before or after their title. The icon is hyperlinked to a version of the article which often omits the navigation system, but includes all the notes and thumbnail images. Click the icon for a version which can be bookmarked in the normal way. After clicking the icon, the page may look the same or it may lack the navigation frame, but in either case it will now be bookmarkable. The differences are because the structure of the site is gradually being changed so that bookmarking will eventually become simpler!
