Victorian Turkish Baths: their origin, development, and gradual decline

Hyperlinks and images
  • Words which are underlined, or individually coloured, are almost always hyperlinks leading to other parts of the site or, less frequently, to other sites.

  • To speed downloading, images in the text are thumbnail versions. A hand icon appears when the mouse is passed over;  clicking it usually leads to a larger, clearer version, with acknowledgements to the source of the image and, often, to an extended caption or additional notes. Always return from these full-screen versions by clicking the browser's back arrow.

Best viewing notes

  • The site works best on a fast computer with plenty of memory. As at 13 April 2008, it looks best using Firefox 2.0, Netscape 9 or later. or Internet Explorer 6 or later.

  • The site is designed to be read in browsers which understand frames. Although there is a  frameless version which includes all significant text pages and illustrations, it does not include the chronologies, notes, or bibliographical references.

  • The site looks best, and is easier to read, on a 17" or larger screen, maximised  by pressing the  f11  toggle key on your keyboard.

For all recommended browsers

  • The recommended screen resolution is 1152 by 864 pixels. To verify or change your setting, right-click on your desktop, then click Properties. Click the Settings tab and check or change  the Desktop area or Screen resolution setting.

  • The recommended number of Windows colours is 256 colours or higher (medium 16 bit, or highest 32 bit). To verify or change your setting, right-click on your desktop, and then click Properties > Settings tab and check the Colour Palette setting.

  • You will get best results with broadband; otherwise, the recommended modem speed is 56k or higher.

For some specific browsers

  • The recommended font size for this site is Normal, or one size less. To verify or change your setting, click View on your Menu bar > Text size. You can either leave the setting at Normal, or decrease the size one step by using Ctrl+ -

  • To maximise the screen area, press f11  on your keyboard. Return to normal by pressing f11  again. Even with a maximised screen, Firefox shows the page's address bar, a Google search button, and pressing Ctrl + F places a search box for that page at the bottom left hand side.

Netscape 9

  • The recommended font size for this site is Normal. To verify or change your setting, click View on your Menu bar > Text size.

  • To maximise the screen area, press f11 on your keyboard. Return to normal by pressing f11 again.

Internet Explorer

  • The recommended Windows font size for this site is Smaller. To verify or change your setting, click View on your Menu bar > Text size > Smaller.

  • To maximise the screen area, click the full screen icon if you have one, or press f11  on your keyboard. Additionally you can push the status bar out of the way by moving it downwards with your cursor. Return to normal by pulling the bar up from the bottom of the screen and pressing f11  again.
