White Rock Baths, Hastings:

the position of the tunnel

Aerial view of the baths

< Photo: Helena Wojtczak

This mid-1990s photograph of the White Rock Baths on the Promenade gives a rough idea of the size of the underground baths complex, from the Turkish baths boiler house (B) and the Turkish baths (Tb) to the swimming pool at the top of the picture. The entrance to the Turkish baths was from the sunken courtyard.

The stump of the boiler house chimney (C) is just behind the large tree, while the dotted line gives an indication of the length of the tunnel.

All positions marked (except the library) are approximate.

Thanks to Helena Wojtczak for allowing us to use her photograph, and for suggesting the overprinting of the position of the tunnel
