His use of heat 'gave such offence to English hydropaths that they contemptuously called St Ann's "a vapour establishment" '

  
1. The spelling of the hydro's name and location varies in contemporary documents, even including those published by the hydro itself. We have attempted to be consistent by using St Ann's (rather than St Anne's) except when quoting directly from a document.
