The Rochdale Subscription Turkish Bath Society was set up in 1859 as a Co-operative Society. Because it was not a limited liability company, there was no legal requirement to keep the same type of records.

The society was the only known co-operative society to run a Turkish bath for any length of time and may, indeed, have been the only such society to set one up at all. Several of its members were Rochdale Pioneers, so the society and its Turkish bath at Church Stile are important in the history of the Turkish Bath Movement.
