Taking a Victorian Turkish bath

Process chart of the Victorian Turkish bath
< Chart © Malcolm Shifrin, 2015

There is no standard prescribed route through the rooms of a Victorian Turkish bath, though some establishments may recommend one, while some others are physically arranged so that a route seems to be standard as, for example, at Camberwell's baths.

Some people never venture into the hottest room which suggests that they prefer to start with the coolest and work their way into hotter areas.

Only three preferences can usefully be stated in the knowledge that they are of real value:

1. however you start, always end with a rest in the cooling-room;

2. once acclimatised, you can go back and forth ad lib;

3. never stay in a Turkish bath if you feel the slightest bit uncomfortable.

I have always preferred to start in the coolest room and work my to the hottest, and this is reflected in the flow chart above.
