Bartholomew was a practised speaker having learned the art when addressing political meetings in the 1850s as an active secretary of the David Urquhart's Bristol Foreign Affairs Committee. While this seems to have been an occasion when he was invited to speak, he would often arrange his own public meetings to canvas support when he was considering opening a Turkish bath in a new town.
